โœฆ Synopsis

Taqieddin, S.A., 1992. Applicability of blast casting technique in strip-mining phosphate rock. Eng. Geol., 33:127 139. The blast casting technique of removing overburden is an innovative technique which is successfully used in the mining of certain surface coal and quarries. This method is efficient in minimizing the labor and equipment cost, while safely accelerating mining operations.

In Jordan, phosphate mining by dragline is widely used for stripping the overburden. An economical alternative to a dragline operation has been investigated due to the fluctuating price of processed phosphate rock, the ever increasing costs of machine spare parts, and the unpredictable world demand for phosphate products. Among the available options proposed by experienced engineers, blast casting for mining phosphate rock appears to be very attractive.

This paper presents an economical and technical analysis of blast casting as a possible alternative for mining in lieu of dragline for stripping at phosphate mining operations in Jordan. The study indicates that blast casting in Jordanian phosphate mining is feasible. The paper also discusses some problems associated with the application of this technique.
