PD measiirements are used to ensure the reliability of a GIs. A risk evaluation is only possible, i f the emitted PD signal at the defect, the transfer behaviour of the CIS and the coupling of the signals are well-known. Diagnostic measuring techniques are mentioned as well as the problems of determining a transfer function for these methods. Experimental and theoretical studies on realistic PD currents show the limits of the diagnostic techniques for quantitative measurements.

To improve the performance of insulators, space charge measurements and localisation are of fundamental importance. For this purpose we have utilised the thermal step method (TSM) which allows measurement of the space charge density within the material. The object of this study is to characterise th
