✦ Synopsis
The antioxidative activities of ethers and partial ethers of 2.2'-and 4,4'-alkylidenebisphenols and of thiobisphenols in the oxidation of isotactic polypropylene at 180 and in the initiated oxidation of tetralin at 65 were investigated. Etherification leads in most cases to a decrease in the activity. The role played by the steric effect of the alkylidene bridge was demonstrated. The transformation products of ethers of alkylidenebisphenols arising during the induction period do not affect further the course of thermal oxidation, while compounds formed from ethers of thiobisphenols haxe a retardative effect at the high oxidation temperature of polypropylene.
