Steven A Porcelli studies antigen presentation by MHC-class-I-like CD1 proteins, which mediate T cell recognition of foreign and self lipid antigens. A major current topic of interest is the regulation of innate and adaptive immunity by CD1ddependent natural killer T cells. In addition, Steven Porcelli is working on a variety of aspects of antigen processing and presentation by cells infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis, with an emphasis on the development of new and more effective vaccines for prevention and control of disease caused by this organism.
