✦ Synopsis

Bowel-cleansing agents may affect the survival and growth of colonic bacteria and so may alter the relationship between colonic epithelium and gut flora.

This study examined the in vitro antimicrobial effects of senna, magnesium sulphate (MgSO,), polyethylene glycol (PEG) 600 and Picolax (sodium picosulphate lOmg, magnesium oxide 3.5 mg and citric acid 12 g) (Ferring Pharmaceuticals, Feltham, UK) against 36 strains of colonic bacteria belonging to four species.
