✦ Synopsis
Artemisia ketone, artemisia alcohol, Pcaryophyllene oxide and 1,s-cineole were confirmed as the major components of the volatile oil from Achillea ageratum L. In an antibacterial diffusion assay, the volatile oil showed activity mainly against Gram-positive bacteria Bacillus sp. and Staphylococcus aureus. The oil also showed some activity against the Gram-negative bacteria, Escherichia coli.

The volatiles isolated from the leaves and flowers of fnufa viscosa (L.) Ait. were studied by means of GC and GC-MS. The oil obtained by hydrodistillation was shown to contain borneol (25.2%), bornyl acetate (19.5%) and isobornyl acetate (22.5%) as major constituents, whereas that isolated first by
The steam-distilled volatile oil of the cinnamon fruit (Cinnamomum zeylanicum Blume) grown at Karnataka and Kerala (south India) has been analysed by GC and GC±MS. It consists of hydrocarbons (32.8% and 20.8%) and oxygenated compounds (63.7% and 73.4%). Thirty-four compounds representing more than 9
The essential oils of fresh ¯owers, leaves and fruits of Murraya exotica L., cultivated in Egypt, were analysed by GC±MS. Forty-four components were identi®ed in the oils. The monoterpene hydrocarbon a-pinene was the major constituent in all cases. The oils exhibited strong antifungal activity again
The composition of the volatile oils obtained from the aerial parts of Hypericum scabrum L. and H. perforatum L. was analysed by GC and GC±MS. While the oil of H. scabrum L. contained a-pinene (71.6%), b-caryophyllene (4.8%), myrcene (3.8%), cadalene (3.4%) and b-pinene (2.9%), the oil of H. perfora
The essential oil from flower heads of Egletes viscosa L. was investigated for possible antinociceptive, anticonvulsant effects in mice and for antibacterial efficacy against resistant Staphylococcus aureus in vitro. It was found to possess a significant dose-dependent analgesic activity as assessed
