The geometrical parameters for the title compound, C 16 H 13 ClOS, are normal. The dihedral angle between the two benzene rings is 48.16 (5) . The non-centrosymmetric crystal packing is consistent with the substantial non-zero second harmonic generation response.

The title compound, C~21~H~15~ClO, was prepared from biphenyl-4-carbaldehyde and 4-chloroacetophenone. Single crystals were obtained from acetone. The compound is isostructural with the corresponding Br compound. The molecule deviates significantly from planarity.

In the title molecule, C 13 H 9 FOS, the dihedral angle between the thiophene ring and the benzene ring is 10.8 (1) . The crystal packing is stabilized by C-HÁ Á ÁO and C-HÁ Á Á hydrogen bonds.
