Abstract
Sera from patients with liver disease, showing positive reactions with human Fraction II (FβII) were submitted to cation exchange chromatography. Rheumatoid factorβlike material, reacting only with FβII and FβII sensitized systems, was eluted at pH 6.0 and pH 7.0. In rheumatoid sera, activity was also eluted at pH 6.5. In the latter fraction, the active material reacted not only in FβII sensitized systems but also with rabbit amboceptor sensitized sheep cells. The distribution of the activity of portal cirrhosis and infectious hepatitis sera between the pH 6.0 and pH 7.0 fractions appeared to differ. The rheumatoid factorβlike material of the serum of a patient with portal cirrhosis was isolated as a 19 S macroglobulin.
