Abstract

Sera from patients with liver disease, showing positive reactions with human Fraction II (F‐II) were submitted to cation exchange chromatography. Rheumatoid factor‐like material, reacting only with F‐II and F‐II sensitized systems, was eluted at pH 6.0 and pH 7.0. In rheumatoid sera, activity was also eluted at pH 6.5. In the latter fraction, the active material reacted not only in F‐II sensitized systems but also with rabbit amboceptor sensitized sheep cells. The distribution of the activity of portal cirrhosis and infectious hepatitis sera between the pH 6.0 and pH 7.0 fractions appeared to differ. The rheumatoid factor‐like material of the serum of a patient with portal cirrhosis was isolated as a 19 S macroglobulin.
