THE zINC smelters of the United States are divided into two groups, -~iz.: (I) those which make high-grade spelter from special ores, this group including the New Jersey Zinc Company, and the Bertha Mineral Company, producing at Bethlehem and Palmerton, Penna., arid Pulaski, Va., spelter fro~m the remarkaqMy pure ore of New Jersey; and (2) those -which make spelter from Western ores. The Western spelter up to about I9Ol was ,made almost entirely from ore mined in Wisconsin and the Joplin district of Missouri-Kansas, and was marketed chiefly under the name of "'Prime Western." Certain smelters, purchasing selected ores, make superior brands. Since 19Ol, the quantity of ore from west of the Rocky Mountains has attained large proportions, and the "prime Western spelter" now produced is largely derived from that class of ore. Many of the smelters separate the first draw of metal, which, being distilled at the low-โข est temperature of the operation, is lower in certain impurities (especially lead) than the second and third draws, and market it as "special." The major part of the Western spelter is produced, however, as ordinary brands, and ,'~,e prices for ore ar.e based on the prices of good ordinary brands of spelter.--Eng, and Min. ]our.
