Imerys will close down its ground calcium carbonate (GCC) plant at Quidhampton, near Salisbury (Wiltshire) early next year, citing a decline in overall demand resulting from a significant reduction in paper production capacity within the UK, combined with a slowdown in the economy. The plant is adjacent to a chalk quarry, where chalk is stripped out without the need for rock-blasting.
Imerys will retain its other GCC operation in the UK, located at Queensgate, near Beverley in the Humberside region. Current GCC capacities are quoted as 110,000 tonnes/y for Quidhampton and 90,000 tonnes/y for Queensgate.
Earlier this year, Imerys implemented capacity cutbacks in its US kaolin operations, citing overcapacity in the graphics paper market.
