The meeting was attended by 200 persons from 16 countries; comment is made in the Preface.that the attendance was probably affected by transport costs to the antipodes in spite of an increase in the number of earth scientists currently participating in Antarctic research since the Third International Symposium on Antarctica was held in 1975, seven years earlier, in 'Madison'. The 1982 date was chosen in order to coincide with the centenary of Sir Douglas Mawson's birth. This Antarcic explorer, geologist and leading Australian scientist died in Adelaide in
