Abstract

Isolation, structure elucidation, and biological properties of a novel class of microbial metabolites, ansamycins, are reviewed as background for the following papers. Structural similarities and differences of ansamycins (rifamycins, tolypomycin, streptovaricins, and geldanamycin) relevant to the common steps in their biogenesis are discussed.
