Alcoa annual stockholders meeting in Pittsburgh to describe alleged workplace exposure to toxic gases. After investigation, the company said there had been unreported gas poisonings at the plant, and a high official was fired.

In a confrontation over establishment of an independent union in a Maxi-Switch plant in Mexico, members of the Communications Workers union a t a Maxi-Switch UPS. The company argued that if the workers chose to unionize, the result could be the permanent elimination of many jobs.

The union said it would charge the company with unfair labor practices. Meanwhile, UNITE will continue its campaign to organize Fieldcrest. A union spokesperson noted that UNITE had had successes a t other southern employees. In 1996, it won a vote among one thousand employees at an Opelika, Alabama, fitness equipment manufacturer, and, in 1994, among three thousand employees at a sweatshirt plant in Martinsville, Virginia. Those victories came after four and five votes, respectively.
