✦ Synopsis
The solubility of a series of monomers, polymers, and initiators in inorganic compounds was investigated. It was shown that the chlorides and nxychlorides of phosphorus and sulfur were good solvents. Thionylchloride and phospho ixychloride were used as solvents for the cationic polymerization of styrene, isobutyl vinyl ether, 3,3-bis-(chloromethy1)oxetane, tetrahydrofuran and epichlorohydrin. Aluminum chloride and ferric chloride were shown to be satisfactory initiators. Acrylonitrile and vinyl chloride could also be polymerized in phosphoroxychloride in the presence of free radical initiators.
