โฆ Synopsis
Abstract
We describe four patients who originally presented with a diagnosis of adolescent anorexia nervosa and were subsequently diagnosed with schizophrenia. Overt positive symptoms of schizophrenia emerged during the course of treatment for the eating disorder. Symptoms such as social withdrawal and reduced work or academic performance, which had previously been attributed to the eating disorder, we considered to be negative symptoms of schizophrenia. We hypothesize that anorectic symptomatology may have represented prodromal features of schizophrenia in these patients. The clinical implications are discussed.
