✦ Synopsis
The linear thermal expansion coefficients a of single-crystalline UGe 2 have been measured in the temperature range 6 K < T < 300 K. It is found that a exhibits a large anisotropy in the temperature dependence and a discontinuous change near 50 K (= Tc), which corresponds to ferromagnetic order. The volume of UGe 2 increases with decreasing temperature below To. The magnitude of spontaneous volume magnetostriction is about 1.2 × 10 3 at 0 K.

Thermal expansion and magnetisation measurements have been performed on a single crystal of HoA12 between 4 and 300 K. A sharp spontaneous volume anomaly has been observed at the spin re-orientation temperature where the easy direction of magnetisation changes from [101] to [010]. A model incorporat
