Abstract
The magnetic anisotropy and ferromagnetic resonance linewidth of CdCr~2~S~4~ single crystals were studied a t helium temperatures. The angular dependence of linewidth and resonance field shows anomalies near the [111], [110], and [112] direction. These are shown to be due t o impurity ions with nearβcrossing levels as Fez+ on the tetrahedral site and possibly Cr^2+^ on the octahedral site. From calculations of the anisotropy due to Cr^2+^ ions it appears that, although their anisotropy can be very large, these cannot be responsible for the anomalous behaviour of nonβstoichiometric CdCr~2~S~4~ reported in the literature. It is suggested that ferrous ion impurities are responsible for this.
