The boron trifluoride promoted decomposition of a number of substituted phenyl azides in toluene, para-xylene, -meta-xylene or mesitylene at 60°C, leads preferentially to fi-benzylamines or diarylamines depending on both ring substituent effect and nucleophilic character of the solvent.

✦ Synopsis
There is recent evidence which suggests that, even where a formal metal-lirand T-bonding concept cannot be invoked. electron withdrawing groups in amines mey stabilize complr:xes of these ligands. It is shown rhat infrared methods may be used to obtain evidence of anomalous s'abiliries in the N-H b0r.d: in zinc(n) complexes of anilines with mildly electron withdrawing substituentr,.
