The Board of Managers of The Franklin Institute, mindful of its responsibility to cherish the worthy aims of the Founders and, at the same time, to interpret those aim.s dynamically in terms of today's challenges, is pleased to present this Annual Report for 1958. The past year may well be remembered in history as the beginning of the Space Age. Reviewing the Institute's contributions to science during these past twelve months, the Board is satisfied that in carrying out its primary purpose-"the promotion of the mechanic arts"-the Institute is meeting the challenge of the Space Age just as successfully as its original members solved the problems posed by America's Industrial Revolution.
