โœฆ Synopsis

Since 1969 the Swiss Physiological Society has met annually with the other Swiss societies concerned with experimental biology (USGEB, Union Schweizerischer Gesellschaften f0r Experimentelle Biologie). This meeting has been a growing success, and a great effort has been made to emphasize the interdisciplinary character of modern biology.

Swiss physiologists have, nevertheless, felt the need to promote the identity of physiology as a scientific and teaching discipline. This led the previous President, Professor P. MQller (Berne), to institute an annual fall meeting of the Swiss Physiological Society, which was held for the first time in 1988. This one-day meeting is subdivided into a morning session dedicated to teaching issues and an afternoon session in which 10 of our younger physiologists present their work as short communications.

A prize of SFr. 500, instituted in honour of Leon Asher and W. R. Hess (physiologists formerly in Berne and Z~Jrich), is awarded for the best communication. This prize, awarded for the first time in 1990, was bestowed on Adrian Gross, working in the team of Dr. Daniel Bertrand in Geneva. The following is the author's synopsis of the prize-winning presentation and appears under the auspices of the Swiss Physiological Society.
