โœฆ Synopsis

Since its initiation in 1980, the Journal of Business Ethics has been publishing original articles from a wide variety of methodological and disciplinary perspectives concerning ethical issues related to business. The editors have encouraged the broadest possible scope. The term 'business' has been understood in a wide sense to include all systems involved in the exchange of goods and services, while 'ethics' has been understood to apply to all human action aimed at securing a good life.

This broad approach to our subject seems to have served its purposes well, allowing the Journal to grow from a quarterly to a monthly since its inception. However, in order to better serve the needs of authors and readers who have particular interests in teaching, as well as all those people without such interests, a division of labour is being introduced. A new journal called Teaching Business Ethics is being initiated, beginning in 1997.

With the coming of the new journal, the Journal of Business Ethics will no longer publish material specially dealing with the teaching of business ethics. In order to accommodate authors who have submitted or who might be going to submit manuscripts for publication to the Journal of Business Ethics, beginning with this notice, we are adopting the following guidelines.

  1. For all teaching papers sent to JOBE but not yet under review, we will write the authors and tell them about TBE and our policy to place such papers in TBE if anywhere. They can go along with the new policy, letting us review the paper for TBE, or try elsewhere.

  2. For all teaching papers sent to JOBE and currently under review, we will wait to see if the reviews are favourable or not. For those teaching papers with good reviews, which previously we would have accepted for JOBE, we will write the authors giving them a choice to publish in JOBE or TBE.

  3. For all teaching papers already accepted for JOBE and already sequenced forpublication when the first notices of TBE go out, we will simply go ahead and publish them in sequence in JOBE.

  4. For all teaching papers already accepted for JOBE and not yet sequenced, we will send the authors a letter giving them the option of publishing in TBE or JOBE, and go along with their choice.

We suppose there will be some judgment calls about whether or not some articles are primarily about teaching, and we assume responsibility to make these judgments. Anyone requiring more information about our general guidelines or more specific issues should contact the Editor-in-Chief.
