✦ Synopsis


The anionic graft polymerization of 4-vinyl pyridine on the potassium alkoxide derivative of starch or dextrin in dimethyl sulphoxide solution was studied. Graft polymerization occurred only at relatively high alkoxide concentration. The yields of pure graft polymer were low due to extensive homopolymerization, probably caused by chain transfer to the acidic hydrogen of the monomer. The grafted side chains of poly-.4-vinyl pyridine were detached from the carbohydrate backbone by acid hydrolysis, and their molecular weights were found to increase with monomer concentration in accordance with a "living" polymerization. The results obtained in the graft polymerization on starch and dextrin were similar.
