This essay is divided into three parts. Section 1 explicates what I understand "animal rights" to mean. Section 2 gives a pragmatic argument for extending rights to animals. Section 3 develops some of the consequences of animal rights for biomedical research. ("Animal" refers to nonhuman animals, and "research" covers scientific education, training, testing, and experimentation.
