โœฆ Synopsis

Anharmonic effects are studied by measuring the temperature dependence of second harmonics of a IO-MHz ultrasonic wave generated near the A transition of pressurized liquid 4He. The anharmonic coupling coefficient C between the fundamental wave and the second harmonic is found to diverge as -[t[-1/t = (T/Tx)-i] near T~. A phenomenological relation is developed expressing C in terms of known relevant thermodynamic quantities. This relation accounts well for the experimental results.

We report new high precision data on the velocity of second sound close to the lambda transition of 4He at the saturated vapor pressure. The second sound wave is detected by a powdered salt pill of copper ammonium bromide in direct contact with the liquid helium. With a thermometer noise of < 10-1ยฐK

Attenuation of first sound has been measured in "SHe under saturated vapor pressure near the lambda temperature TA at frequencies to/ 2~r ranging from 10.2 to 271 MHz. The frequency dependence of the critical part of the attenuation is determined and the dynamic scaling hypothesis is examined. Above
