✦ Synopsis

The intensity of Penning electrons arising from ionization of Ar by a thermal beam of He(2kS. $8) metastables has been measured as a function of the angle 6 between metsstable beam and detector directions. The distribution is asymmetric with respect to 8 -1 900. favouring large angles. and different for ionization by He(21S) and He(22S). The results are discussed on the basis of an atomic-rbital picture of the autoionizing system.
