✦ Synopsis
And if the Polysomnogram Was Faulty?
Marcus and her colleagues 1 engaged in an interesting search: Do children with primary snoring progress to develop obstructive sleep apnea syndrome? The first question raised is what is the definition of primary snoring? Interestingly, the authors in their discussion indicate that 80% of their ''primary'' snorers had difficulty breathing at night despite ''normal polysomnograms.'' The authors went on to remind the reader of one of their prior studies 2 and a study by Suen et al. 3 that ''parental history'' is a poor predictor of sleep apnea; but the authors also noted that a number of subjects underwent adenotonsillectomy despite a normal polysomnogram.
