✦ Synopsis

An analytical method is used to study the tensile stresses beneath a rock cutter, which is modelled as a ®nite length strip of facial pressure and shear along an in®nite notch. For notch angles greater than 1208, the elastic stress ®elds are predominantly tensile and it is recommended that cutters span less than 908 in order to maximize tensile stress development and chip formation.
