β¦ Synopsis
Interference caused by a digital carrier or carriers into another digital carrier is a common type of interference in satellite communication systems. So far this type of interference has generally been assumed to be noise-like. Since the probability distributions of digital carriers and Gaussian noise are dissimilar, the validity of this assumption needs to be re-examined. The mechanism of interference caused by digital carriers has been analysed in this paper for a variety of situations, including singleand multiple-carrier interference, wideband interference into a narrowband carrier and narrowband interference into a wideband carrier. The impact of other types of interference has also been evaluated for comparison purposes. The quantitative difference between the original digital interference and its noise-like equivalent has been defined by computer simulation and further verified by laboratory tests.
