✦ Synopsis
Two-point laser Doppler velocimetry is used to investigate the turbulent ¯ow behind an axisymmetric cylinder head simulating the intake stroke of an internal combustion engine. Pro®les of axial, radial and tangential mean and RMS velocities as well as pro®les of integral length scales are measured at several distances from the cylinder head. The eect of non-homogeneity of the ¯ow on integral length scale is investigated. The eects of swirl and valve lift on integral scales are also analysed. The temporal spectra of the tangential ¯uctuating velocity are measured to identify the swirl centre precession.
