✦ Synopsis

Ahatraet-Impedance measurements have been combined with ellipsometric measurements. The optical properties change with varying potential due to the formation of a thin layer or to changes in the composition of the passive f&t. This combination of techniques can, therefore, give more insight into the passivation mechanism of iron chromium alloys. The results obtained emphasize the important contribution of hydrogen adsorption to the chromium and the 17% Cr alloy corrosion mechanism. The measurements are also in agreement with recently obtained XPS data and further support the model for chromium passivation published before.
