✦ Synopsis

The arc spectrum of the last rare earth element, lutetium (Z = 71) has been analyzed. The most important electron configurations in Lu I have been identified, and practically all strong lines have been classified. A list of levels ( 51) and a table of all classified lines (124) are given. The ionization potential is found to be 6.15 Volt. *) Conformably to a recommendation made by the Joint Commissiol~ for Spectroscopy at its Rome meeting, September 1952, wavenumbers are expressed in the unit kayser (K), defined as 10 -~ times the reciprocal value of the international ~ngstr6m (,~.).
