Catastrophic failure along a dominant shear band sets the limit on how much plasticity can be achieved in metallic glasses (MGs) under uniaxial compression. Here we show that this instability process is governed by a single system parameter, called the shear-band instability index (SBI), which is pr

โฆ Synopsis
For structural components made of sintered metals the porosity may be rather high\ and this a}ects conditions for material failure[ A simple model for analysis of shear band development in uniformly strained solids is used here to study the e}ect of rather high initial porosities on the onset of a material instability[ The elastic plastic behaviour of the material is represented by a material model\ which combines the Gurson model\ relevant to rather low porosities\ with the FKM model\ developed for high porosity powder compacts[ Predictions are shown for various levels of initial porosity and for various levels of initial material imper! fections\ considering both plane strain and axisymmetric conditions outside the shear band[ Also a com! parison of localization predictions by the Gurson model\ the FKM model and the combined model is presented[

This paper shows that it is inappropriate to relate the angle between the loading axis and the shear-band (or fracture) plane in metallic glasses under uniaxial loading conditions to the coefficient of internal friction in the Mohr-Coulomb model. The paper investigates the incipience of shear band with an incrementally non-linear constitutive equation. Necessary conditions for the emergence of shear band are derived. The lower bound solution is obtained by taking the strain rate inside and outside the shear band into consideration. Numerical
