✦ Synopsis

Severe rain spells, which occurred in 1993 monsoon season over the Indian region, were examined for hydrometeorological analysis. It was seen that during 9-12 July, heavy to very heavy rainfall was reported by many stations in the north-west Indian region of Gujarat, F'unjab, and Haryana. This heavy rainspell gave two separate rainstorm patterns: one over the Gujarat region, and other over the Punjab and Haryana region. Both these rainstorms have been analysed by the depth-area-duration technique. The areal rainfall data obtained from the analysis have been compared with similar data of past severe rainstorms of the respective region. The analysis has shown that the 9-12 July 1993 rainstorm, although not as severe as past rainstorms, yielded areal rain depths of 12.4, 23.2, and 28.4 cm in 1, 2, and 3 days in Gujarat and 13.4, 19.8, and 30.3 cm over F'unjab and Haryana, respectively, over an area of 50 000 km2.
