✦ Synopsis

This paper describes a one-dimensional numerical model that simulates oil recovery from tar sands by reverse combustion. The method of lines is used to solve the nonlinear differential equations describing the flow. The effects of volumetric air flux on the peak temperature, flame velocity, and oil recovery efficiency are reported. The results are compared to the results of relevant experimental studies.

The Laramie Energy Technology Center (DOE) has completed its second in-sifucombustion experiment (TS-2C), which was carried out in the Northwest Asphalt Ridge tar sand deposit near Vernal, Utah. During the experiment (183 days) 92 m3 (580 barrels) of oil was produced, 25% of the original oil in plac

Simple chemical reactions are described which bring about modification of the components of a bitumen. This i!: accomplished by using an oxygen-containing gas and subsequent treatment with alkali solutions of sulphites and/or bisulphites. The resulting water-soluble sulphonated bituminous derivative
