✦ Synopsis
Three crystalline substances were isolated from the methanol-soluble portion (SBM) of the extracted residues from pyridine extracts of Sorachi coal with hexane. They were characterized by using the i.r., u.v., 'H n.m.r. and mass spectra together with the ultimate analysis. Two cannot be clearly defined in terms of the structural formula, but one of these seems to comprise either an alicyclic ring or a methyl substituted unit of five cata-condensed aromatic rings, and the other contains an ether linkage and two or three condensed aromatic rings. The third seems to be a mixture of di-and trimethyl-l ,2,5,6_dibenzanthracene. The new compounds may offer interesting information on the linkage of structural units in coal and the coalification process.
