✦ Synopsis

An accurate and precise method for determination of phenylephrine hydrochloride and phenylpropanolamine hydrochloride is described. This method is based on measuring the aryl aldehydes, which are selectively extracted after periodate oxidation of the two phenylethanolamines. It is sufficiently sensitive for individual dosage unit measurements. No assay interferences were apparent with a stressed mixture where phenylephrine was acetylated by aspirin.
