✦ Synopsis
In the course of a study of the evolution of a genus of African flycatchers, Batis, numerical techniques were employed to analyee the characters of the populations of the forest-dwelling Both and to throw some light on their relationships. The techniques reported upon in this paper are non-metric multidimensional scaling (MDS) and the Unweighted Pair-group Method using Arithmetic Averages (WGMA). The results obtained from them numeric analyses closely parallel those using non-quantitative methods.
