The efficiency and computational accuracy of the boundary element and finite element methods are compared in this paper. This comparison is carried out by employing different degrees of mesh refinement to solve a specific illustrative problem by the two methods.

The scaled boundary รฟnite element method, alias the consistent inรฟnitesimal รฟnite element cell method, is developed starting from the di usion equation. Only the boundary of the medium is discretized with surface รฟnite elements yielding a reduction of the spatial dimension by one. No fundamental sol
## Abstract In this paper a new boundary element formulation is presented for the identification of the location and size of internal flaws in twoโdimensional structures. An introduction to inverse analysis is given, with special reference to methods of flaw identification, along with a brief revie
## Abstract Geotechnical design is increasingly carried out by incorporating the finite element method (FEM), supported by increasing PCโpower. It is discussed and explained with the help of an example to what extent this method can be used as to verifications according to European and German stand
