According to the core-cladding interface of an ideal wa¨eguide, a step-index fiber, the trans¨erse plane has been di¨ided into two regions. Mode fields and propagation constants of the graded-index optical fibers ha¨e been calculated by the use of partial-wa¨eguide-mode expansion and coupled-mode theory.
