Abstract
The depolymerization behavior of the copolymers of 1βpentene and 4βmethylβ1βpentene has been studied. Regularities found in the spectra are employed to develop an analytical method for assaying such copolymers. The results obtained are confirmed by NMR assays. Variations in cracking severity did not influence the analytical results much. It is concluded that the results are dominated by the bond strengths of the polymer chains, since rapid escape of the fragments from the reaction zone is possible. A direct and simplified analytical method resulted, employing direct depolymerization within the sample system of the mass spectrometer.
