✦ Synopsis
Iridals constitute a class of triterpenoids characteristic of the genus
Iris which have been demonstrated to be the precursors of irones, a group of compounds widely and successfully used in the perfume industry because of their attractive violet smell. Packed column supercritical fluid chromatography with ultra violet detection was applied to the analysis of the iridal fraction isolated from rhizomes of Iris pallida L. Various chromatographic conditions were applied (different columns, column coupling and stationary phase coupling, different density programmes, and several modifiers and modifier programmes) in order to optimize iridal separation. C 18-and CN-stationary phases were successful in iridal separation. A comparison in terms of resolution and analysis time with the results obtained from high pressure liquid chromatography is reported.
