โฆ Synopsis
Considerable energy is expended in the production of broilers. Methods to recover some of this energy such as heat exchangers and earth tubes have limitations. However, an underground heat exchanger such as that developed at the West Virginia University combines the best features of both these systems. In a previous study a sensible heat solution for the West Virginia University heat exchanger was postulated. This solution did not take into account the condensation of vapour in the exhaust air, and the effect on the heat transfer between the exhaust and intake air.
A second solution, developed to consider the latent heat of condensation, found only a 1% difference as compared with the earlier sensible heat solution. Thus, the earlier sensible heat solution can be used in design of the underground heat exchanger.
