We haiv studied the performance characteristics of a semilinear tupered-wni3egiiide laser-diode amplifier. It has been found that an improivment of otw 10 dB in saturation output power can be obtained when the amplifier i.s properb designed. The effect of the output width o f this amplifier on the saturation outpiit power, polarization, and amplified spontaneous emission noise hus been studied.
