✦ Synopsis
Document caching at proxy servers is widely adopted in todays Internet, since it is one of the most efficient ways to save the required capacity of the Internet access line. Hence, for efficient design of an Internet access network, it is essential to know how the characteristics of Internet traffic are affected by document caching. In this paper, we first investigate the effect of document caching on the World-Wide Web (WWW) traffic characteristics using the log data gathered at the proxy server. Based on this analytical result, we next build an M/G[log-normal]/1/PS queuing model to discuss a design methodology for an Internet access network.
