Abstract Vertical distributions of sulfate-reducing bacteria and methane-producing archaea were investigated in the profundal sediment of a freshwater lake using membrane-immobilized small subunit rRNA hybridization with group- and genus-specific oligonucleotide probes. The annual average of the rel
