Abstract

The author has shown previously that three of the independent derivations of the GIBBS adsorption theorem, namely the ones by GOUY & MILNER, by GUGGENHEIM and by FOWLER & GUGGENHEIM, are invalid. It has also been shown that a totally different adsorption relation by J. J. THOMSON is extant and this relation has been extended to a completely general form. Finally it has been indicated that all remaining independent derivations have the starting relation and certain assumptions regarding this relation in common with the original GIBBS' derivation.
