En el Nápoles de finales del s. XVI Ana y Miguel, los hijos del gobernador Don Álvaro, descubren poco a poco la pasión que sienten el uno por el otro. Criados juntos alrededor de la figura materna, Doña Valentina, y de la lectura de los clásicos, como Platón y Séneca, sólo durante el largo cortejo fúnebre de su madre toman conciencia de lo que ya habían intuido durante tiempo. Así, por más que intentan luchar contra ello, refugiándose ella en la religión y él en sus correrías nocturnas, la fatalidad acaba por imponerse. Tras la muerte de Miguel, Ana vivirá ya para siempre marcada por el recuerdo de este amor único, que la acompañará durante toda su vida, desde el matrimonio concertado por su padre hasta el retiro final en un convento, y que será su única ilusión tanto para vivir como para morir.
