✦ Synopsis
Objective: To identify the structural gray matter (GM) correlates of verbal memory impairment in patients with clinical and pre-clinical Alzheimer disease (AD). Methods: Magnetic resonance imaging data (SPGR TR 28, TE 6, slice thickness 1.5 mm) were analyzed from 19 AD and 5 mild cognitive impairment patients who later converted to probable AD. Following 3D hemispheric reconstruction, 36 sulci per hemisphere were traced. Cortical surfaces were flattened and warped, to explicitly match data from corresponding gyri before averaging across subjects. Individual average verbal memory domain Z scores, computed from the Z scores of the retrieval portion of the California Verbal Learning Test and Logical Memory I and II, were entered as covariates in a general linear model that predicted the GM density for each subject. Results: Verbal memory Z score correlated strongly (p Ͻ 0.05) with gray matter integrity in the bilateral precuneus (BA 7), entorhinal and parahippocampal (BA 28, 34, 36), inferior temporal (BA 20) as well as the left temporooccipital (BA 37) cortices. Discussion: Verbal memory deterioration correlated with atrophy in areas implicated in retrieval of verbal information (BA 7) and storing of lexical phonologic representations (BA 37).
