โฆ Synopsis
This paper presents an update on the mass transfer performance of counterflow, packed deaerators containinq pall-rinq packinq. New mass transfer data obtained by Golshani and Chen are compared-to resuits obtained with the commonly used prediction methods. Because of their high quality and the favorable agreement, they are recommended for evaluating the' packing height. Also addressed is the added mass transfer or enhancement that is obtained with the use of a spray-nozzle distribution system. Recent data from full-size deaerators at operating desalination plant sites were used to check the conclusions concerning the mass transfer performance of two-inch pall-ring packing and spray-nozzle distribution systems. Only fair agreement was obtained and the possible causes for this disparity are discussed. Of particular interest were the effects of the antifoam and the stripping steam flow rate on the effluent oxygen concentration, two factors which are not considered in the standard prediction methods for packed deaerators. It is apparent that these and some other secondary effects become important if very low effluent oxygen concentrations --less than 20 ppb --are desired.
