A case is described where the scientific investigation of a fatal carbon monoxide poisoning produced some unexpected results. In the weeks following the death, several very different interpretations were to come forward as the possibility of accident, suicide and murder was tested in turn. This enquiry provided a good example of close collaboration between the forensic science laboratory and police investigating officers.

In 47 patients treated at the Toxicological Clinic in Krakow for coal stove-gas poisoning, the aspartate aminotransferase, lactate dehydrogenase, LDH1 isoenzyme activities, and the lactate level were studied. Findings were compared with those of earlier investigations carried out on a group of patie
